Research Paper Guidelines
Requirements:
§ 5 page minimum, 10 page maximum
§ 12pt Times or Times New Roman font
§ Double-spaced
§ 1 inch margins on all side
§ Works cited page (if necessary) should not be included in the page count
Objective:
To write a substantive essay on a topic of your choice, demonstrating a deep understanding, critical
analysis, and original thought on philosophical subjects.
Instructions:
§ Choosing a Topic:
§ Begin with a list of class topics that intrigued you the most.
§ For each topic of interest, use the chatbot to recommend broader paper
subjects based on your other interests. For instance, if you’re fascinated by
Plato’s analogy of the cave, the chatbot might help you relate this to modern
virtual reality experiences, the nature of enlightenment in Eastern
philosophies, or the portrayal of reality in cinema.
§ Once you’ve pinpointed a topic, you can further refine its scope and
direction.
§ Constructing the Paper with AI:
§ Use the chatbot to craft an initial outline for your paper. This outline will
be your roadmap, marking major sections and crucial arguments.
§ For each section, engage in a conversation with the chatbot to clarify what
you intend to convey. The chatbot can provide insights, critique, and even
challenge your perspectives, making it a valuable critical conversation
partner.
§ After aligning with the chatbot on each section’s purpose, allow the bot to
draft that segment.
§ Insert the drafted content into a word processor like MS Word or Google
Docs.
§ Review and Refinement:
§ Constructing a paper quickly doesn’t mean compromising its quality. The
value of your paper hinges on the effort invested in discussion, critique, and
subsequent editing.
§ Continuously refine the paper, balancing the bot’s inputs with your unique
voice and perspective. Ensure the narrative feels authentic and resonates with
your understanding of the topic.
§ Stay Philosophical:
§ Remember, the primary goal is a philosophical discourse. While
interdisciplinary insights can enrich the paper, they should tie back to
philosophical underpinnings. Periodically, consult with the chatbot to ensure

§ Submission:
§ Printed Paper: Submit a printed version of your paper in class on the
specified due date. You will also upload this to Carmen.

provide the conversation thread they had with the AI, illustrating the
guidance and instructions given to the bot during the paper’s development.
§ In-class Exercise: Summarize your research paper in a timed, hand-written
context during class, highlighting your grasp of the topic and main
arguments.
§ Evaluation:
§ Your paper will be assessed based on the depth of research, clarity of
arguments, philosophical relevance, and the synthesis of personal analysis
with AI-assisted content. The conversation thread with the AI will also offer
insight into the level of effort and engagement in crafting the paper.
